Thunder Beat Force 5-4 to Split Series

Game Box Score

LEAGUE CITY, Texas – A night after being shut out by Philadelphia, the Texas Thunder jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before having to hold on for a 5-4 win at the Big League Dreams Sports Complex on Saturday night.

Texas (12-8) used a four-run first inning to jump out to the early lead with the big blows coming off the bats of rookies Danyele Gomez and Serena Settlemier. Gomez delivered the first home run of the inning with a deep shot to left field driving in Kristen Zaleski and Rocky Spencer who reached base with hits before her. Settlemier stepped up two batters later and drilled the second home run of the inning to give the Thunder a 4-0 lead.

The home run for Gomez was her first of her career, while Settlemier's was
her fourth.

Philadelphia (5-9) would respond in the second inning with three runs of their own to close the gap to 4-3. The Force got an RBI walk from leadoff hitter Sarah Fekete to drive in the first one of the inning. Force second baseman Carri Leto then hit a high hopper over the head of Clare Burnum at third base to drive in two more runs. Fekete also drove in a run in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at four runs apiece.

The game would remain tied until the bottom of the sixth inning when Gomez would deliver again. The rookie stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and drove in the potential winning run on a fielder's choice. The four RBI game is the highest total of her short career.

Going unnoticed in the game was probably the work of Texas ace Christa Williams. Williams, who improved her league-best record to 8-0 on the season, did her part in keeping the team close. The three-year league veteran went the distance for Thunder allowing five hits and the four earned runs. She did strike out seven hitters in the game to increase her league-leading total to 66 on the season.

The Thunder will return to action on Wednesday night when they host the Connecticut Brakettes at the Big League Dreams Sports Complex. All four games of the series with the expansion Brakettes will begin at 7:05 p.m at the complex in League City.
