Heat Take Second Straight From Dominican Republic

TUCSON, ARIZ – The Arizona Heat struck early to win their second straight game against Dominican Republic. Leslie Wolfe hurled a complete game two-hitter and the Heat used three first inning runs to beat the Dominican Republic 4-1. Nichole Thompson delivered a clutch, two-run double in the first to provide the Heat with the early lead.

Wolfe (3-3) made her sixth start of the season for the Heat, allowing only an unearned run and striking out a career high seven batters. Wolfe shut the Dominican Republic down early, going five and one-third innings before allowing the first hit. Missy Penna made her second straight start for the national team fairing much better then the night before. She tossed a complete game, surrendering four runs – three earned – on seven hits.

The Heat jumped out to an early lead for the second straight game, this time scoring three runs in the first. Autumn Champion led off the inning with a single and promptly stole second. After a walk to Kaleo Eldredge, Champion stole third and scored on an error. Toni Mascarenas followed with a walk and a steal putting two runners in scoring position for the Heat. With two outs in the inning, Nichole Thompson dropped a double down the left field line, scoring both runners.

Penna would settle down over the next four innings, only allowing two Heat runners to reach. Wolfe matched her inning for inning, surrendering only a walk through the first four innings. In the fifth Yaritza Rodriguez lined a single to left to break up the no-hitter.

The Dominican Republic would get on the board in the sixth. Wolfe walked Leidy Paulino to lead off the inning and then gave up a one-out single to put runners on the corners. Paulino would score on a passed ball, cutting the Heat lead to 3-1. Wolfe rebounded by retiring the next two batters and ending the threat.

The Heat would add an insurance run in the bottom half of the sixth on a RBI double by Heather Scaglione. Wolfe got into some more trouble in the seventh after Geovanny Nunez reached on an error. Penna followed with a single to right but Nunez was gunned down at the plate by Kaleo Eldredge to get the first out of the inning. Wolfe got the next to batters to ground out and end the game.

Seven different Heat batters collected one hit on the night, led by Nichole Thompson’s two run double. Autumn Champion added a single and stole two bases while Toni Mascarenas stole one of her own. Heather Scaglione delivered the other Heat RBI with a double, finishing one for three.

The Heat are home again tomorrow night for the third game of the series with the Dominican Republic at Hi Corbett Field. The game will start at 7 pm.
