Heat Rout Hurricane in First Game

Game Box Score

TUCSON, ARIZ – The Arizona Heat used a big first inning to defeat the Southern California Hurricane 12-4. The Heat bats started and ended hot, totaling 18 hits on the night. Desiree Serrano hurled her seventh complete game of the season, improving her record to 8-7.

Serrano took the mound opposite University of Arizona’s own Taryne Mowatt. She went the distance, allowing four runs on five hits and fanning four. Mowatt did not fair as well, only lasting two innings. She surrendered six runs – two – earned on six hits and four walks. Mayumi Murakami finished the final four innings and gave up six runs – five earned on twelve hits.

The Heat got things going early, using five hits and two Hurricane errors to put six runs on the board in the first. Autumn Champion reached on a bunt single and stole second. Nichole Thompson then ripped the first pitch into right field, scoring Champion and putting the Heat up 1-0. A wild pitch, passed ball and an error led to the next three runs before a RBI double by April Valdez made the score 5-0. LaDonia Hughes’s run scoring double capped off the scoring in the inning.

The Hurricane got three back in the second on three hits and a pair of walks. Amanda Fernandez’s fielder’s choice put them on the board before Brianna Goad’s two-run single cut the lead to three.

Arizona added a run in the bottom of the third when Crystal Farley scored after an errant throw. The Hurricane got the run back in the fifth on a RBI single off the bat of Murakami.

The Heat would put four more on the board in the fifth to blow the game wide open. The inning started with six straight singles, including four in a row that drove in a run. Arizona collected another run in the sixth on a RBI single by Shana Easley to make the score 12-4.

Six Heat batters picked up multiple hits, led by Autumn Champion and LaDonia Hughes delivering three apiece. Champion also stole her 12th base of the season, giving her the NPF lead and tying a Heat franchise record. Nichole Thompson contributed two hits and two RBIs while extending her hitting streak to ten games. Catalina Morris, Kaleo Eldredge and Crystal Farley had two hits apiece on the night.

Brianna Goad led the Hurricane offense with a hit and a pair of RBIs.

The Heat and Hurricanes square off again tomorrow night for the second game of the series. The game will start at 7 pm at Hi Corbett Field.
