Team Canada Beats Thunder 6-0; Texas Collects Just Two Hits

LEAGUE CITY, Texas – It was another slow game offensively for the Thunder on Wednesday night at Big League Dreams as they collected just two hits in a 6-0 loss to Team Canada to fall to 17-24 on the season.

Canada got on the board for their first run of the game in the top of the third inning. Melanie Matthews started the Canadian rally with a double that was just out of reach of Thunder first baseman Karrie Rider. Erin McLean then walked to put runners on first and second with just one out. After a strikeout to Sheena Lawrick for the second out of the inning, Canada got on the board after a bothced defensive play by the Thunder. McLean was caught in a run down and during the play Matthews came all the way from second base to score the run.

The team from up north scored two more runs in the top of the fifth on a two-run homerun from Lawrick and they tacked on three more in the top of the sixth to increase the lead to 6-0. Lawrick again did the most damage as she drove a two-run single to right field. She finished the game 2-for-4 with a homerun and four RBIs.

The offense provided by Canada was all that pitcher Danielle Lawrie needed on Wednesday night. The hard-throwing right hander from the University of
Washington allowed just two Thunder hits on the night and she struck out eight. From the third inning on Lawrie dominated the Thunder offense retiring 14 of the final 15 hitters in the game.

Texas had its best chance against the Canadian National Team when they loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning with just one out, but Adrian Gregory and Denise Dahlberg both struck out swinging to end the threat. The Thunder would not get another run past first base in the game. Overall, the Thunder left four runners on base in the game.

Christa Williams (9-8) took the loss in the circle for Thunder in the series opener allowing three of the six Team Canada runs. Williams went the first five innings of the game and struck out nine to increase her league-leading total to 144. Nicole Neuerburg relieved Williams in the circle and she allowed the final three runs of the game in two innings of work.
