GREAT BRITAIN SEEKS PLAYERS FOR NATIONAL TEAM

The Great Britain Women's Fastpitch National Team is entering the final stages of an intensive two-year program aimed at qualifying for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and is looking for high-level players with a British family heritage who might be eligible to play.

To be eligible for a British passport, a player must have been born in Great Britain or have a British parent – either mother or father, as long as the parents were legally married. Having a British grandparent will not do. In terms of British heritage, players or parents who come from England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland (but not the Republic of Ireland) are all potentially eligible.

The Great Britain team has moved up over the past three years from #10 to #4 in Europe. In March 2004, the team won the Olympic Test Event in Athens and in the summer of 2006 they competed by invitation in the Softball World Cup in Oklahoma City and followed this with a 10th place finish (after coming in as the #16 seed) at the ISF World Championships in Beijing.

Starting at the end of May 2007, the Great Britain team will be competing in the European Championships, followed closely by the Euro/African Olympic Qualifying Tournament (June 11-18) – and if they can win that tournament, they will be one of the eight countries competing in what may be Softball’s final Olympic Tournament in Beijing.

Part of the Great Britain squad consists of players based in Britain and the rest are current, former or future college players who come from the US, Canada and Australia.

Although team management is happy to hear about quality players with British eligibility who play any position -- they are particularly keen to recruit pitchers.

Playing international Softball is exciting, and great fun. It does not affect NCAA eligibility and the team will do everything possible to work around players’ college or work obligations.

So, if you are a high-level player who may be eligible for a British passport or who has one already, or if you know a player in this position in a program you are involved with, please get in touch with one of the following team contacts at your earliest opportunity.
