Washington Loses to Venezuela 4-2

Fairfax, VA - The Washington Glory (11-3) fell to Venezuela, 4-2 on Thursday night at the George Mason Softball Complex. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Glory, and was just the second home loss this season for Washington.

Behind home runs by Yuruby Alicart and Yaicey Sojo, as well as, solid pitching by starter Mariangee Bogado, Venezuela went on to take an early 3-0 lead after two innings.

With two outs in the first, Alicart took the first pitch from Glory starter, Desiree Serrano deep to left center. Denisse Fuenmayor followed up with a double to right center, and was driven in by Ruby Rojas' RBI single to center.

Sojo homered off Serrano to lead off the second to take a 3-0 lead, but Serrano settled down and got the next six batters out.

Washington got a run back in the third as LaDonia Hughes reached while getting hit by a pitch. After stealing second, and advancing to third on a groundout by Kelly Kretschman, Hughes later scored on a wild pitch, cutting the lead to two.

Venezuela responded right back with a run in the fourth as Rojas led off the inning by receiving a free pass by relief pitcher, Sarah Pauly. Yusmari Perez then singled to right as Catalina Morris bobbled the ball allowing Rojas to move to third. Rojas stole home as Perez was caught stealing second.

The Glory added a run on two hits by Sara Larquier and Callie Piper in the sixth, but also had two runners thrown out at the plate that inning to end the rally.

Washington went three up, three down in the seventh as Bogado picked up the
complete game victory. Bogado allowed just two runs on four hits on the day.

Serrano (6-2) received the loss allowing three runs on five hits in three innings of work. The former Sun Devil did strike out four batters while not allowing a walk. Pauly pitched solidly in relief striking out five and allowing an unearned run in her four innings.

First pitch for game three of the Venezuela series is scheduled for 7:05 pm tomorrow night at the George Mason Softball Complex. Tickets are still available on www.washingtonglory.com.
