Glory Drops Second Straight to Venezuela

Fairfax, Va. - Washington committed five errors and allowed 14 hits as the Glory fell to Venezuela, 9-4, on Friday night at the George Mason Softball Complex.

Venezuela erupted for five runs in the first inning, and after three frames, held 7-1 lead. Jineth Pimentel started the first inning with a one-out single and scored when the next batter, Yuruby Alicart homered to left field. Denisse Fuenmayor followed up reaching on an error and was ran for by Mariange Bogado. Both Yusmari Perez and Yaicey Sojo then singled to load the bases for Maribel Riera. Riera was hit by a pitch to score Fuenmayor for the third run of the inning. Kelly Mendoza then reached on an error which allowed both Perez and Sojo to score, and take a 5-0 lead.

Washington starter Sarah Pauly failed to record an out in the second inning as Maria Soto led off the inning with a home run. Pauly (5-2) was then replaced by Jen Musillo, who recorded her longest outing of the season.

Venezuela added a run in the third off Musillo on a RBI single by Kelly Mendoza. Sojo scored on the play after reaching on a single and then stole second. She later advanced to third on a groundout by Riera.

Amber Jackson got the Glory on the board in their half of the third with a two-out home run to right center. The blast was Jackson's league leading fourth home run of the season. Jackson also leads the leaguie with 16 RBIs.

In the bottom of the fifth, with the score 7-1, the Glory scored another run to cut the lead to five. Nicole Barber (3-4, 2 runs scored) reached on a one-out single and then promptly stole second. Kelly Kretschman then was hit by a pitch by starting pitcher Marianella Castellanos. Jackson followed grounding out to the first baseman who tagged first and attempted to throw out Kretschman at decond. The throw was wild and allowed Barber to score on the play.

Venezuela got both runs back with a run in the sixth and seventh inning to take a 9-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Down seven in their final at bat, the Glory rallied but fell short, scoring two in the inning. Barber started the rally with a one-out double and was plated on a RBI triple by Kretschman. Kretschman later scored as Jackson followed reaching on an error.

Musillo pitched 5.2 innings allowing three runs on nine hits. Desiree Serrano recorded the final out for the Glory.

Castellanos received the win for Venezuela allowing two runs on four hits in 4.1 innings. Bogado pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits.
