Vandergeest's Hot Run in Thunder's WinRockford Moves to 15-6 on Season

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford Thunder got back on the winning ways Tuesday night, as they knocked off the visiting Mid-Michigan Ice by a final score of 4-1.

Rockford (15-6) wasted little time getting on the board as they scored in the bottom half of the first inning without the aid of a hit. Kristen Zaleski was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and was sacrificed over to second base by Jackie Wong. She would eventually come in to score on a fielder’s choice ground out by Mackenzie Vandergeest.

The Thunder didn’t do much of anything in the second or third innings, but they woke up the bats in the home half of the fourth. Vandergeest delivered the first big shot, a solo home run to centerfield to lead off the inning, which was her fourth of the year. De De Justice was next to deliver a big hit. The rookie, who was the designated player on Tuesday, hit her first home run of her big league career, a two-run shot that pushed the scored to 4-1.

Mid-Michigan, who actually out-hit the Thunder 5-4 in the game, managed a single run in the top of the fifth inning. Meaggan Pettipeace came around to score the lone run for the Ice after opening the inning with a single to left field.

Serena Settlemier continued her hot run in the circle by tossing the complete game to get the win. The win upped her mark to 6-2 on the season, which is good enough for second-best in the league. The run Settlemier allowed in the fifth snapped a streak of 23 consecutive scoreless innings.

The Ice is a women’s major team that is working on obtaining the proper credentials to be a part of the league in 2008. The games do count in the official National Pro Fastpitch standings.

The Thunder, who is currently in the midst of a 12-game home stand, will be in action again tomorrow night at 6:35 p.m. for game two of the series with the Ice. Tomorrow night will be ½ priced Wednesday and all GA tickets will be just $2.50/each.

Fans are also encouraged to bring noisemakers into the game to help show your support for the Thunder. Horns, cowbells and others are allowed as long as the play is not in progress.
