Rockford Takes Game Three from Michigan Ice

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford Thunder tied a season-high with 11 hits on Thursday night to defeat the Michigan Ice 7-2 at Sportscore One.

The game didn’t start out well for the Thunder as they allowed Michigan to get on the board first with a first inning unearned run. Lani Shaffer reached safely on an error by Serena Settlemier, who was making her first start of the season at first. Shaffer eventually came around to score the game’s first one on a single by Miranda Ervin.

Rockford (16-7) got the run back and one more in their half of the first inning to take the lead for good in the ball game. Kristen Zaleski started things off for the Thunder with a walk and she was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jackie Wong. Catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest stepped to the plated and drove in Zaleski to even the score. The Thunder would eventually load the bases before Lindsay Gardner singled to right field to score Vandergeest.

The Thunder scored three more times in the bottom of the third inning on the aid of three more hits. Pinch-runner Jamie Davison scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch by the Ice. Audrey Rendon then stepped to the plate and drove in her first two runs of the night with a two-out single to centerfield.

In the fifth inning Rockford would score two more runs, again using three hits to do so. Amanda Williams started the rally with a double off the fence and she was knocked in by Rendon. Wong then delivered an RBI double to score Zaleski, who had reached on a fielder’s choice in the inning.

Amanda Freed picked up her first win of the season to even her record at 1-1. On the night, Freed went six innings and allowed four hits to the Ice. She also allowed two runs in the game, but just one was earned.

Former Southern Illinois University standout Cassidy Scoggins pitched the final inning for the Thunder and did not allow a run. Her ERA is now 0.50 this season in 14.1 innings pitched.

The Ice is an independent professional team that is working on obtaining the proper credentials to be a part of the league in 2008. The games do count in the official National Pro Fastpitch standings.

Friday night’s game is fourth game of a 12-game home stand for the Thunder. First pitch with the Ice is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CDT and Serena Settlemier is expected to be in the circle for the Thunder. The first 200 hundred kids in attendance will receive a voucher good for Saturday night’s Rock River Raptors Indoor football game.
