The Glory move into sole possession of first place

Fairfax, VA - It was home run derby in Fairfax, as the Washington Glory
pounded four home runs en route to a 9-3 victory over the Akron Racers on Friday night at the George Mason Softball Complex.

The Glory scored in each of the first three innings to take an 8-0 advantage which they would not relinguish. Washington scored twice in the first inning on a two-run home run by Oli Keohohou, her third of the season. LaDonia Hughes scored on the play after striking out, but reaching first as the pitch squirted past the catcher.

Washington then erupted for five more runs off starting pitcher, Radara McHugh, in the second. Nichole Thompson led off the frame by crushing a solo home run to dead center. After Callie Piper drew a free pass, the two-out rally was on as Nicole Barber and LaDonia Hughes reached on a single and another walk, loading the bases. The Stanford grad then lined a single to left, scoring both Piper and Barber. Keohohou then drew an intentional walk to load the bases again, this time for Sara Larquier. Larquier, the leading home run hitter in the NPF, did not homer, but drove a two run single to left to score Hughes and Morris.

Jessica Moore drilled her third home run of the season to lead off the third as the rout continued.

The Glory threatened again in the fourth but left the bases loaded.

After Sarah Pauly allowed a solo home run to Kristen Butler in the fifth, her first of two on the day, the Glory got that run back in their half of the inning. Stephanie Best, led off the the Washington half of the fifth pinch hitting for Brooke Marnitz. Best came through as she nailed her third home run of the season.

Akron got two runs in the seventh off a two-run homer by Butler but it was not enough to overtake the Glory.

Pauly improved to 6-2 on the season as the the Glory moved into sole possession of first place at 13-4. Pauly pitched her third complete game of the season, allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out 10.

McHugh received the loss for the Racers allowing nine earned runs on 10 hits. Akron has yet to send in a relief pitcher all season.
