Glory Cruise to Victory Over Racers

Fairfax, VA - The Washington Glory (14-5) cruised past the Akron Racers (10-5), 1-4 on Sunday afternoon at the George Mason Softball Complex. Amber Jackson collected three hits on the day, while Nicole Barber and Catalina Morris both drove in three runs to lead the attack.

Akron scored two in the third to take the early lead, but the Glory responded for two of their own that same frame, and never looked back. Callie Piper led off the third with a walk and was pinch ran for by Brooke Marnitz. Marnitz stole second, and later scored from third on an RBI single by Jackson, cutting the Akron lead to one. Nichole Thompson followed Jackson's single with a double down the right field line, scoring Barber from second, tying the game at two.

Washington shot off a fireworks display of their own a few days early, exploding for seven runs in their half of the fourth. Oli Keohohou led off the rally with a walk, and later reached second on a single by LaDonia Hughes. A single by Jessica Moore then loaded the bases for Barber, who made Akron starter, Radara McHugh pay with a base clearing triple, and ginving the Glory a 5-2 advantage. Barber then scored on a wild pitch. After a bunt single by Jackson and a walk by Nichole Thompson, McHugh was pulled in favor of Jamee Juarez. This was the first time Akron has had to use their bullpen all season.

Juarez did not fair much better as the first batter she face, Catalina Morris took her deep with a three run home run to left center. The blast was the Stanford product's first home run of the season.

The Racers got a run back in the fifth and sixth off Sarah Pauly, but not enough to overtake the Glory, who only stranded four runner on base.

The Glory added another run in their half of the sixth as Moore led off the inning with a walk, and scored on a batted ball by Thompson, who reached on a three base error by the right fielder.

Sarah Pauly (7-2) received the win after allowing just two earned runs on seven hits and striking out six in her six innings. Jen Musillo went the final inning striking out one and allowing no hits.

McHugh was charged with the loss allowing eight runs on eight hits in 3.2innings. Juarez settled down after the home run by Morris, allowing one earned run in her 2.1 innings of relief.

The same two teams will meet tomorrow night at 7:05 pm at the George Mason Softball Complex in the final game of the four game series. Tickets are still avaliable at Fans can also purchase tickets at the stadium or by calling 703.362.4464. The Glory will host the Michigan Ice in a four game series, starting July 5th at 7:05 pm.
