Thorson, Pruis, Hall Calm the Riptide

Allentown, Pa. - Kristina Thorson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the New England Riptide and the Philadelphia Force came away with a 7-1 victory in the completion of the suspended game from July 4. In the regularly scheduled game, the Force, behind the strong pitching of Margo Pruis, defeated the Riptide 1-0.

In the early game, the Riptide scored back on Independence Day to take a 1-0 lead, but the Force would take the game over starting in the third inning, Second baseman Emily Friedman lead off the frame with a single up the middle. Left fielder Megan McAllister was then hit by a pitch. With runners on first and second, the league’s leading hitter, shortstop Chelsea Spencer, singled to right center, and although Emily Friedman was cut down at the plate, the Force had runners on second and third. First baseman Jenna Hall delivered a two-run single up the middle to give the Force a one-run lead against Danielle Henderson (3-2).

Thorson (4-2) pitched all seven innings over the two different nights to earn the win. She allowed just one hit, one run, and stuck out six.

In the fourth, Trena Peel slammed her third home run of the season, a solo shot to straightaway center field to make the score 3-1 Force.

The Force added four more in the sixth inning, and left the drama up to Thorson to see if she could complete her second no-hitter of the season. Thorson got the first out in the seventh, but first baseman Lyndsey Angus singled past a diving third baseman Clare Burnum and shortstop Spencer for the Riptide’s only hit of the game.

In the nightcap, Pruis (3-0) pitched a complete-game shutout. She yielded just three hits in the win.

The Force (9-9) would score the lone run of the game in the first inning. Center fielder Sharonda McDonald knocked a one-out single off of pitcher Eileen Canney (3-2). She promptly stole second base. Then one out later, Hall singled in her third run and second game-winning RBI of the two-game night.

The rest of the game belonged to Pruis and the defense. The Riptide (12-10) did threaten in the fourth inning, but with runners at first and third, Pruis induced a two-out pop up to pitch hitter Lisa Modglin to end the inning.

The Force will try to make it four-in-a-row against New England on Saturday night at 7:05. This game is Lehigh Valley Hospital Night. The fourth game of the series is now scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1:05. This is a make-up from Thursday night’s rainout.
