Rockford Rallies from Seven Runs Down to Beat Bandits

ROCKFORD, Ill. – Saturday evening’s game started very similar to the first two games of the series, but the outcome was different, as the Thunder knocked off the Bandits 8-7 in front of a crowd of 1,027.

Stacy May led off the ballgame for Chicago (13-14) with a home run to left field to help the Bandits jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Chicago would tack on one more in the inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead.

The Thunder (18-9) answered back in the bottom of the first inning with a run of their own to cut the lead in half. The score wouldn’t stay at 2-1 long as the Bandits connected for five more runs in the top of the second inning. Three of the runs came in to score in the inning because of control problems from starting pitcher Amanda Freed. She walked in two runs and forced in another when she hit Megan Willis with a pitch.

Freed was removed from the ballgame at that point in favor of rookie Cassidy Scoggins, who was very good on Saturday. Scoggins allowed one hit in the second allowing another run to score, but the run went to Freed’s line. After that point Scoggins was nearly perfect. She allowed just two more hits in the game over the final five innings to pick up her third win of the season to zero defeats.

Rockford answered Chicago’s five runs with four of their own in the second inning, closing the gap to two runs. From that point on it was all Rockford offensively as they scored the final three runs of the game in the home half of the fourth inning.

The Thunder pounded out 14 hits in the game, three of which went for doubles. Audrey Rendon and Mackenzie Vandergeest each collected three hits in the game, while Settlemier and Amanda Williams each picked up two hits.

Rendon earned the game ball from Manager Jav Vela following her 3-for-4 performance at the plate and six assist performance at third base.

Rockford and Chicago will wrap-up the series on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Sportscore One. It will most likely be a rematch of the opening game of the series with Serena Settlemier starting in the circle for the Thunder and Jessica Sallinger pitching for the Bandits.
