Home Runs Pivotal in Thunder Win

ROCKFORD, Ill. – For the second straight night the winning team knocked out three homeruns, but on Saturday night it was the Thunder doing the clubbing, as they beat the Washington Glory by a final score of 5-4.

Washington (20-7) got on the board first when Amber Jackson connected for an RBI double to right centerfield to score Catalina Morris who led off with a walk. The Glory wasn’t done scoring in the inning, as they added two more when Oli Keohohou launched her second no doubt home of the series. The home run was her sixth of the season.

The Thunder (21-10) would answer back in the bottom of the first when Serena Settlemier launched a 1-2 pitch to left field for a two-run homerun.

The score would remain 3-2 in favor of the Glory until the bottom of the fifth inning when an unlikely hero stepped up for the game tying home run. Jamie Davison, who was making her fifth start of the season, drove a pitch to left centerfield to tie up the game. The homerun was her first of the season and first of her professional career.

Three batters later, with Kristen Zaleski on second base, Mackenzie Vandergeest knocked out the deciding home run to give the Thunder the 5-3 lead.

Washington made it close in the seventh with one more run, but Serena Settlemier picked up the save in relief of Amanda Freed to seal the victory. Freed improved her record to 2-1 on the season.

Rockford and Washington will close out the four-game series on Sunday afternoon at 3:05 p.m. at Sportscore One. Serena Settlemier, who won game one and picked up the save on Saturday, will most likely oppose game two winner Desiree Serrano on Sunday.
