Washington Clinches Regular Season With 6-5 Win

Fairfax, VA – Oli Keohohou drilled the game-winning home run in the seventh inning in walk off fashion to give the Washington Glory a 6-5 win over the Rockford Thunder on Sunday afternoon at the George Mason Softball Complex. With the victory, the Washington Glory (31-9) clinched the NPF regular season title in their home finale.

Washington took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on a pair of home runs. LaDonia
Hughes took a 1-1 offering from Serena Settlemier deep to right field to lead off the inning. The blast was Hughes' first home run of the season. Kelly Kretschman then drew a walk, and advanced to second on a ground out by Nicole Barber. After getting Keohohou to ground out, and allowing Kretschman to steal third, Amber Jackson took Settlemier deep for her league leading 14th home run of the season.

Monica Abbott carried a perfect game into the fifth inning, but it was then where Rockford finally got to her. The Thunder responded for five runs on five hits and an error. However, since four runs came with two outs, only one run was earned. Desiree Serrano came into the game with two outs in place of Abbott to get the final out of the inning while allowing one hit.

As they have all season long, when the opposition scored a run, the Glory was quick to get those runs back. Down 5-3 in their half of the fifth, Washington scored two runs to lock the game at five. With two outs, Keohohou went with the 1-2 pitch, and drilled it down the right field line to leg out a double. Brooke Marnitz came into the game to run for Keohohou at second base as Jackson stepped to the plate. With Cat Osterman warm in the bullpen, head coach Javier Vela elected to stay with Settlemier to pitch to Jackson with first base open. Jackson made the Thunder pay as she slugged her second home run of the day, and 15th of the season to tie the game at five. Osterman came into the game right after and struck out Nichole Thompson to end the inning.

Neither team would score in the sixth inning, as the score remained deadlocked at five going into the seventh inning.

Rockford managed to get a runner in scoring position but was unable to score as Serrano retired the side.

Osterman struck out Kretschman on a pitch the just clipped the inside corner for the first out of the inning. The former Texas Longhorn also struck out Nicole Barber for the second out. However, she was not able to retire Keohohou who went opposite field once again. On a full count, Oli slugged her 11th home run of the season over the right field wall for the game-winner.

Desiree Serrano earned her 17th win of the season, which tied her for the single-season NPF record. Christa Williams of the Texas (now Rockford) Thunder had 17 wins in the 2005 season. Abbott received the no decision in her 4.2 innings of work. The NCAA record holder in several pitching categories allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out five.

Osterman received the loss and fell to 3-4 on the season. The lefthander pitched two innings and allowed just the home run to Keohohou while striking out four.

The Glory went 24-4 at the George Mason Softball Complex in their inaugural
season. Washington will travel to Chicago to face the Bandits in a four game series starting on August 10.
