Bandits Lose Game Three to Glory, 5-3

LISLE, Ill. - The Washington Glory (31-12) won their third consecutive game over the Comcast Chicago Bandits (19-20) thanks to a 5-3 victory on Sunday at the Benedictine Sports Complex. This win keeps the Glory atop the National Professional Fastpitch standings. The Bandits topped the Glory in most every category today except the one that counted most, the runs. Chicago out hit Washington by a 9-5 margin. Washington even committed more errors than the Bandits (4-3).

However, Washington made the most out of their hits, slugging two homeruns in the game. The first was a three-run, inside-the-park, shot down the left field line by Nicole Barber. Bandit left fielder Caitlin Lever dove for the ball but was unable to make the catch allowing the ball to roll to the fence. The speedy Barber clipped around the bases. Washington’s Sara Larquier had a solo homerun to leadoff the seventh inning. The Glory would add one more run in the seventh.

Both homeruns came off Bandit reliever Jessica Sallinger, who was charged with all five runs, only one of which was earned due to three Bandit errors in the game. Sallinger struck out four and walked two in 3 2/3 innings of work. Sallinger came out in relief of starter Gina Oaks who went the first 3 1/3 innings allowing two hits and no runs, while striking out four and issuing just one walk.

The Bandits led 3-0 through four innings of play. Stacy May’s squeeze bunt in the third inning scored Vicky Galindo while advancing Lindsay Schutzler to third. Jennie Finch, playing first in today’s game, smashed a double to right center bringing Schutzler in to score to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team. Chicago would add another run in the fourth frame when Lever scored off of a throwing error by Glory first baseman, Oli Keohohou.

With Monica Abbott in the circle for the Glory, the Bandits faced an uphill battle against one of the leagues’ premier pitchers. Abbott improved her record to 2-0 with the complete game victory striking out 11 and walking none.

The series finale between these two teams will take place tomorrow night with the game time set for 7:05 pm. If you can’t make it out to the park be sure to tune in to Comcast Sportsnet tomorrow for live coverage of the game.
