- Three straight three-run innings pushed the Rockford Thunder (14-18) to defeat the Akron Racers (16-16). Stephanie Best helped propel Rockford to victory with a mammoth home run to left field and three runs batted in on the night.
Serena Settlemier (2-7) pitched a good game for the Thunder. Through five innings she gave up just one run on two hits before having a rough sixth inning. Allison Kime pitched in relief, throwing a perfect two innings for the Thunder. Angel Shamblin (3-5) took the loss for the Racers, giving up five runs over 3.1 innings.
Akron had a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Rockford began doing their damage. The Thunder scored first as Stephanie Fischer crossed the plate off of a Kristen Zaleski double. Zaleski and Erin Evans then came around to score as Tonya Callahan's single was misplayed by the Akron defense.
In the fourth, Best helped the Thunder pick up where they left off, hitting her leadoff home run. Three batters later, Fischer hit a slam of her own, driving in Amanda Williams.
The Thunder got three more in the bottom of the fifth inning after Zaleski and Callahan singled to begin the inning. The Racers intentionally walked Lindsay Gardner to load the bases with none gone. Best furthered the Thunder's cause again, this time hitting a single down the left field line, driving in Zaleski and Callahan. Williams drove in Gardner with two outs to cap the scoring for the Thunder.
The Thunder will travel to Akron to play another four-game series against the Racers starting Tuesday at 5:00 pm Central.
