Stockton, Calif. The California Sunbirds fell for the fourth straight time to the NY/NJ Juggernaut, losing 2-0 on Thursday, July 1. With the loss the Sunbirds fall to 8-16 on the season while the Juggernaut improve their record to 16-9.
The Juggernaut were able to jump out front in the game, scoring the only runs of the ballgame in the third after capitalizing on some uncharacteristic miscues by the Sunbird defense. Jackie Pasquerella started the inning off for New York/New Jersey with an infield single and moved into scoring position by stealing second. Wasting no time, Lauren Bower plated the first run of the game with a triple to right field. She came into score after the sure-handed second basemen of the Sunbirds, Nikki Beal, was unable to come up with a ground ball the jumped off the bat of Kellie Wilkerson.
Despite giving up two runs, one of which was earned, Jodie Cox pitched another great game for California on route to picking up her 11th loss of the season. Cox gave up just four hits on the day after giving up just five hits in her last outing, an eight inning outing in relief. Cox has had three straight, solid appearances for the Sunbirds, but has not received any run support. The Birds have been held scoreless for a streak of 22 straight innings, which is a span of two games.
The Sunbirds will look to even the series at one game apiece tomorrow, Friday, July 2, as they continue their three-game home stand against the NY/NJ Juggernaut. Game time is scheduled for 7:35 pm.
