July 22, 2005 - TUCSON, ARIZ The Arizona Heat returned home this week to face the Mexican National Team, and got off to a good start. The Heat won their tenth consecutive home game with a 1-0 win over Mexico. Erica Beach out dueled Marissa Marzan, tossing a one hit shutout and picking up her tenth win of the season. Jackie Coburn delivered the only run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
Beach hurled her third shutout of the season and her tenth complete game, while allowing a season low one hit. She took a no-hitter into the sixth, but allowed a two out infield single to Jackie Vasquez. Beach also walked only two batters and struck out five. Marzan pitched a complete game for the Mexican Team, allowing only an unearned run on three hits and three walks.
Both teams found it very difficult to get any offense going in the early innings. Beach allowed a first inning, two out walk, before retiring the next ten Mexican batters. Marzan matched Beach pitch for pitch, allowing only a lead off single to Ladonia Hughes and a walk through the first three innings.
The Heat got something going in the fourth on a lead off single by Cheryl Schaefer. Nichole Thompson followed with a bunt that was thrown into left field, allowing both runners to advance. With one out and runners on second and third, Jackie Coburn delivered a sacrifice fly to shallow center to give the Heat a 1-0 lead.
That would prove to be all that Beach would need. The Mexican National Team threatened in the sixth, getting a runner to third with two outs, but Beach was able to pitch her way out of the jam.
Cheryl Schaefer was the hitting star for the Heat collecting two of the teams three hits and scoring their only run. Jackie Coburn drove home the lone run for her eighteenth RBI of the season.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 6:30 pm at Hi Corbett Field.
