Houston- Team USA and 2004 Olympic gold medalist Amanda Freed used her strong right arm in the circle pitching a two-hit complete game shutout, 3-0, Thursday night at the Big League Dreams Sports Park in League City. Freed kept the powerful Racers lineup off balance all night long giving up only two singles on the evening. The near capacity crowd witnessed an outstanding pitching duel between Team USA teammates Freed and Jamie Southern. It would be Freed, again, this time flexing her muscle as she drove a Southern riseball to the center-field wall, over the head of Nacogdoches native Ihyia Mc Michael and driving in a sack full of Thunder. Adrian Gregory started the 6th inning with an infield hit and would advance to second on a throwing error by Racer second baseman Hilary Puglia. Gregory would move to third on a Lindsay Gardner sacrifice bunt. Erin Evans would work Southern for a walk and steal second on the ensuing pitch. Kim Nesloney walked , one batter later, Julie Watson would hit into a fielders choice forcing Gregory at home. Then with two outs in the inning Freed smashed a double to center scoring all three Thunder runners.
Thats all the Thunder would need as Freed shut the Racers down in the seventh and picked up her 9th win on the season. The Thunder returns to action Friday night in game two of the series, needing just one win to lock up a post season birth for the second consecutive season. Christa Williams, a late scratch in game one due to a nagging hand injury, is scheduled to bring her league leading strike out and win lead to the circle for Texas Thunder. The Thunder will play three more games at home in the series concluding the regular season. Friday and Saturdays games are set for 7:00 P.M. and Sunday's conclusion is at 1:00 P.M.
