Racers and Force Postponed In Sixth

By:
AKRON, OHIO– For the Akron Racers and the Philadelphia Force Opening Night will be played over the course of two days. The defending National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) champions, Akron, and the newest team to the league, Philadelphia, waited through an hour and 33 minute rain delay before getting the 2006 season underway, and then play was suspended and called for the evening following inclement weather in the top of the sixth inning with the game still scoreless.

What was played of the game was a pitchers' duel. Jamie Southern took the mound for the Racers, and through five innings the only blemish on her pitching line was a hit batsman in the fifth. Yet to allow a hit, Southern struck out six, including the side in the top of the third. The Force's Jenn Stewart was equally as impressive, giving up only one hit, while walking two, hitting one batter and striking out three. Stewart had retired the last 10 Racer batters until the game was suspended.

Akron had scoring opportunities in both the first and second innings with runners on first and second and one out, but they were never able to advance a runner past third. Sara Larquier notched the sole hit of the game, a single to lead off the second.

The game will be picked up Thursday in the top of the sixth inning at the regularly scheduled start time of 7:05 p.m., followed by a complete seven-inning game upon its conclusion.
