Lowell, MA - The New England Riptide wrapped up their first home series of the 2006 season with a 3-0 loss to the Chicago Bandits. Due to rain the Riptide played a three game series with the Bandits which included a double header Sunday. Chicago captured the first game of the series 4-3 but the Riptide came back to take the second 8-6.
Chicago opened up scoring in the final game of the series. MacKenzie Vandergeest was first to bat in the top of the second inning for the Bandits launching a double into right center field. With one out in the inning a double to right by Selena Collins scored Vandergeest giving Chicago an early 1-0 lead. The Bandit run sparked the Riptide defensively shortstop Destiny Frankenstein made a terrific catch on a fly ball for the second out of the inning and turned it into a double play by throwing out Collins at second who had advanced on the play.
The Bandits struck again in the fourth inning. Treena Peel walked after being hit by a pitch, but was caught stealing second by Riptide catcher KJ Kelley for the first out of the inning. Riptide pitcher Mariangee Bogado walked Jaime Clark and then a homerun by Vandergeest put Chicago on top 3-0. The Riptide struggled offensively throughout the entirety of the game with only two hits on the night. The biggest offensive surge for the Riptide came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Lindy Winkler hit a triple to right center with two outs in the inning, but was left on base when Lisa Iancin flied out to the shortstop.
Chicago went on to win the final game of the series 3-0, but Riptide pitcher Bagado collected five strikeouts in her first appearance with New England.
