Game Box Score
LEAGUE CITY, Texas Although the offense for the Thunder continues to struggle, it was a big, two-run base hit by Clare Burnum that gave Texas all the offense it would need against the Racers on Wednesday night to defeat Akron 2-0.
With the bases loaded in the second inning Burnum stepped up to the plate and drilled the ball to right field knocking in Rocky Spencer and Kim Nesloney. Both Spencer and Nesloney were on base thanks to some wild pitching from Akron starter Brandee McArthur.
The two runs in the second inning was the only offense of the game, as both McArthur and Texas Thunder ace Christa Williams controlled the game. McArthur allowed just three Thunder hits in the game, but took the loss to fall to 3-6 on the season.
The win for Williams was her first in a couple of weeks and she is now 9-3 on the year. The three-year veteran went the distance for Texas allowing four hits, while striking out seven.
Akron was led on the night by centerfielder Iyhia McMichael. McMichael finished the night 2-for-2 with two singles and a walk.
The win for the Thunder improved them to 15-14 on the season, while the Akron Racers slipped to 15-13. Akron currently holds the final playoff spot in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF), one game ahead of the Thunder.
Texas will return to action at Big League Dreams on Thursday, July 20 at 7:05 p.m. when they host the Akron Racers for the second game of a four-game set.
