The Rockford Thunder of National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) and General Manager Aaron M. Moore announced today that they have agreed to terms with first baseman Kim Wendland for the 2007 season. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 2007 season will be Wendlands first season in a professional softball uniform. The 24-year-old Rock Island native was drafted by the New England Riptide prior to the 2005 season, but didnt play due to a knee injury suffered in college.
Wendland, who currently resides in Hoffman Estates, will be looked at to be the everyday first baseman for the club in 2007, a position she played at the University of Georgia from 2001 to 2005.
While at Georgia, Wendland was a three-time All-American, four-time All-Region, four-time All-Southeastern Conference and the 2005 SEC Athlete of the Year.
When the opportunity came about to play with the Thunder I was definitely excited, said Wendland. Being able to be a part of the teams inaugural season in Rockford is something I am looking forward to. I am ready to contribute to the team in any way that I can.
This is one of the biggest signings weve had this winter, said Moore. We are looking forward to a lot of good things from Kim. She helps fill a hole at first base for us and were confident shes going to fit into the middle of our lineup.
With the addition of Wendland the teams 2007 roster now stands at nine with several others still pending. Wendland joins gold medal pitcher Cat Osterman, 2005 NPF League MVP Kristen Zaleski, Vandergeest, twin sisters Amanda and Jessica Williams, Jackie Wong and recently signed Lindsay Gardner and De De Justice.
