Akron, Ohio - The Akron Racers kicked off the 2007 campaign in much of the same fashion as they closed out the 2006 regular season beating the Chicago Bandits 4-1.
The big shot of the game belonged to Racer newcomer Veronica Wootson in her first at-bat in Racer colors blasted a home run. The shot traveled right down the left field foul line and broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the second plating her and Ianeta Le'i who had singled in the previous at-bat.
After getting two runners on in both of the first two innings, but not managing a run against the resilient Radara McHugh (1-0), the Bandits would strike back cutting the lead in half on a RBI single by Jamie Clark.
That would be all the scoring Chicago (2-5) would muster as tough pitching by McHugh and great defense by Racer catcher Kristen Butler, who threw out two base stealers and picked a runner off of third, and Racer second baseman Wootson would subdue an rally the Bandits hoped to put together.
The defensive play of the game came in the top of the fifth as leadoff hitter Stacy May of the Bandits, who scored the team's only run, hit a soft liner up the middle that looked destined for the outfield when Wootson came diving out of nowhere to steal a base hit from May.
The Racers (1-0) would add insurance runs in both the fifth and sixth innings and supply more than enough run support to secure the victory.
The Bandits and Racers go at it for round two of this four game series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m.
