- Illinois State graduate Stacy Birk went the distance in the circle to lead the Philadelphia Force to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Washington Glory in game two of a four game National Pro Fastpitch league series. Birk was 1-for-3 on the night at the plate and had 2 RBIs. Glory pitcher Desiree Serrano pitched 4.1innings and gave up two runs on six hits. Serrano was charged with the loss.
The Force started the scoring in their first at-bat. Chelsea Spencer led off with a single. After a Glory error by second baseman Nicole Thompson on a Trena Peel grounder, Kellie Wilkerson loaded the bases with a single. Birk then drove in two runs with a single to left field.
Spencer would add her second hit of the game in the fifth inning. Next batter, Peel was hit by a Serrano pitch. With Wilkerson at the plate, the Force then tried a double steal, but Spencer was thrown out at third by Glory catcher Callie Piper. Peel then moved up to second base on the play. Wilkerson drove the next pitch into the gap in right center scoring Peel. The run batted in would be Wilkersons third of the season.
The Force would hold the 3-0 lead until the top of the seventh when the Glory would get on the board. With two outs in the inning, designated player Jen Chamberlin would draw a walk. Jessica Moore was sent in to pitch run at first base. Sara Larquier would hit her second home run of the season, and of the series, to make the score 3-2. Stephanie Best would get a pinch single to put the tying run on first base. But Birk would get Nicole Barber, who was 2-for3 on the night, to fly out to Jamie Dacey in left field to give the Force their first win of the season.
The Force (1-1) and Glory (4-2) will play game three of the series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at ECTB Stadium.
