In a must-win type game, the Thunder dropped a 2-1 decision to the Mid-Michigan Ice on Wednesday night, dropping to 15-7 on the season.
Both teams scored their runs in the ballgame on the big blast. Kristen Zaleski put Rockford on the board in the bottom of the third inning with her first home run of the season, but the Ice answered back in the top of the fourth when Becky Manson connected for a two-run home run giving Mid-Michigan all they would need.
The Thunder had probably the biggest threat of the ballgame in the top of the first inning, but it went for not. Zaleski, who was 3-for-3 in the game, led off with a double, Audrey Rendon then doubled putting runners on second and third with no outs. Amanda Freed was next and she hit into a fielders choice to retire Zaleski at the plate and Rendon was out on the play while trying to advance to third. With two outs Mackenzie Vandergeest doubled again putting runners on second and third, but Kim Wendland struck out to end the inning.
Rockfords lack of offense was a big part in the loss on Wednesday. The No. 1 and 2 hitters (Zaleski and Rendon) were 5-for-6 in the game, while the rest of the lineup was just 1-for-20.
Abbie Sims took the loss in the circle for the Thunder dropping to 4-2 on the season. She pitched 6 1/3 innings in the game and allowed three hits and two earned runs. She struck out eight.
Rookie Cassidy Scoggins closed out the game for the Thunder getting the final two outs of the game.
The Ice is an independent professional team that is working on obtaining the proper credentials to be a part of the league in 2008. The games do count in the official National Pro Fastpitch standings.
Tomorrows nights game is third game of a 12-game home stand for the Thunder. First pitch with the Ice is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CDT and Amanda Freed is expected to be in the circle for the Thunder.
