Lowell, MA - The New England Riptide and Chinese National team met for the last time today. Starters were the same as the first game, Eileen Canney for the Riptide and Li Qi for China. Qi has appeared as a starter or reliever in each of the four games.
The game was a classic as you would expect when one of the top pitchers in the world duels the NPF strikeout leader. It was the Riptide and Canney who came out on top pushing across a run in the bottom of the 7th to take the final game of the series 1-0.
Canney was absolutely brilliant striking out 12 to take over the league lead in that category also, allowing three hits and two walks.
The biggest Chinese threat was when Sun Li led off the fifth with a double, but remained on second as Canney retired the next three. The Riptide won it in the seventh on consecutive lead off singles by Jess Merchant and Lisa Iancin. Iancin had two of the Riptide five hits and her single sent pinch runner Shanel Scott to third after she stole her league leading 25th base of the year. Scott did not take much time to score the winning run as Alex Sutton lifted a deep fly ball to left giving China no chance to throw out the speedy Scott. This was the Riptides 20th win of the season against 12 losses and Canney improves to 7-3.
The Philadelphia Force come to Martin Softball Field on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week. All games will be at 7:05 and will be the last chance to see the Riptide as they will not be back to Lowell until August 10th.
