Racers defeat Thunder 2-1 in pitchers duel

By:
The Texas Thunder fell to the Akron Racers 2-1 in a pitching dual at the University of Houston softball stadium on Wednesday night.

Dana Degen of the Racers hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning, which was all the offense Akron needed in the game. Thunder pitcher, Marissa Young, scattered five Racers’ hits and had three strikeouts in the losing effort.

Brandee McArthur of the Racers gave up six hits and had five strikeouts to get her first win of the season, and the first win for the Akron franchise.

Defensively the Racers third baseman, Tracee McCoy, led the way with a team-high four assists. The Thunder’s middle infield, consisting of Lindsay Gardner and Karrie Rider, showed defensive strength and some extraordinary efforts to make key plays during the game.

The Thunder’s Clare Burnum had the teams first double of the young season, while Selena Collins and Erin Evans each went 2-for-3 on the night. The Racers’, Brandi Stuart, also collected two hits on the night in the winning effort.

The next Texas Thunder game will be on Thursday, June 4th at 7:35 pm CDT at the University of Houston softball field at the corner of Scott Street and Elgin. The game will be the final game of the three-game series with the Racers.
