- The holiday season is here and the weather outside is cold, but in just over five months, the action will be hot on the field at ECTB Stadium as the Philadelphia Force return to Allentown for their third year of fast-paced softball in the National Pro Fastpitch league. The Force will begin their quest for the championship on Thursday, May 29 when they host the Netherlands National Team.
The front office has been busy during the offseason, which was highlighted by obtaining pitcher Amy Harre, who was the number one overall pick in the 2005 NPF Senior Draft and an All-NPF selection in 2006, from the Chicago Bandits. The Force also acquired the number one pick in the February 18 draft. This gives the Force the first and second picks in the upcoming draft.
The Force currently have 15 players signed for the 2008 season. 2007 NPF All-Star shortstop Chelsea Spencer returns to lead the team. Spencer finished the season as the third leading hitting in the NPF with an average of .333. She also was in the top five of the league for runs scored with 25. Spencer will be joined by first baseman/designated player Kellie Wilkerson for her second season with the Force. Wilkerson, an All-NPF selection as well, led the NPF in drawing walks (32). She also knocked five home runs and her .321 batting average was good enough for seventh in the NPF. Center fielder Sharonda McDonald is back after a rookie season in which she garnered All-NPF selection. The speedster batted .331 and stole a team-high 13 bases. Right fielder Trena Peel enters her second season with the Force. The four-year veteran of the NPF was tied for team lead in homers with five and batted .309 on the season. Long-ball hitter and fan favorite, Jenna Hall, is also set to return for her third season with the Force.
The NPF will play a 48-game this season with each team facing all the NPF teams. The Force will welcome to ECTB Stadium Chinese Taipei as well as the Netherlands. Once again TV 2 Sports will be our broadcast sponsor and the league is busy trying to secure some national television exposure as well.
