Stockton, Calif. The California Sunbirds lost their first series of the 2004 season, falling 3-1 to the visiting Texas Thunder on Sunday, June 6. With the loss the Sunbirds fall to 3-3 on the season while the Thunder improve to 4-2.
For the second game in a row, the pitching of Texas starter, Christa Williams, stifled Californias offensive attack. Despite going only three innings, taking her out of line for the win, Williams held the Sunbirds hitless giving up only one unearned run. She was relieved in the fourth inning for unknown reasons by Peaches James who came in and earned the win for the Thunder in spite of getting into jams in fifth and sixth inning.
The Sunbirds only real threat came in the fifth inning as they opened the inning off, breaking the combined no-hitter, with a single and a double off of James. California was unable to capitalize as James eventually struck out Jaime Foutch to end the inning with the bases full of Sunbirds. James got into a minor jam in the sixth but was able to get out of the inning unscathed. In her four innings of work, James gave up four hits but retired six Sunbirds via the strikeout.
For the second game in a row, the presence of Kristen Zaleski and the bat of Lindsey Gardner fueled the Thunder offense. A thorn in the side of California, Zaleski found herself on base three times even though she went 0-for-1 for the game. To add to her stellar series, Zaleski crossed the plate each time she set foot on base, twice being driven home by Gardner who finished the game with two hits and two RBI. Gardner finished the day with five hits and five RBI, with each of her base hits plating Zaleski. Zaleski finished the series going 5-for-9 with five runs scored and five stolen bases.
James picked up the win for the Thunder as she went four innings while giving up no runs on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks. She is now 2-0 on the young season.
Cox took the loss for the Sunbirds falling to 1-1 on the season as she pitched six and a third innings giving up three runs on three hits while striking out seven.
The Sunbirds will be back in action on Thursday, June 10 as they travel to Akron, Ohio to take on the Racers.
